The "W" In Glow
We identified G for “Gratitude”. We have worked through L with “Let It Go”. We’ve learned to accept things for how they are through "O" with "Own it." Now, for our final and most important component, W. Do everything "With love."
Do everything with love. Be loving to every other person, most importantly, love yourself. Now, something I talk about in the workbooks is that for me, for a long time, love was a loaded word. Because I had a complicated relationship, where we loved each other but it didn’t feel quite right.
I've had complicated romantic relationships over the years, where we would say, "I love you," but we weren’t really living love. The word “love” can get a lot of people wound up. If you are one of those people, anytime you hear “love” from me or anyone else, just substitute in the word, "kind." Be kind to others, be kind to yourself, live with kindness in your heart.
Love is compassion. We don’t have to understand why people do things, we don’t have to approve of the way people live their life, but we can have compassion when they're in pain. We can have compassion when they're sick. There's nothing that stops us from doing that.
Then, there’s empathy. We can’t always have empathy because we haven’t always gone through what other people have. But a lot of times we can remember. I remember what it was like to be that young girl in a corporate office and doing something really boneheaded. You know what? I'm going to give her a break because I remember how hard that was trying to find my way in the world. Empathy, we can give that.
When you think to yourself, what is the most loving, or what is the most kind, thing I can do at this moment? It will always lead you to the right action as long as you keep yourself in the equation. Loving is not giving, giving, giving to others at the total expense of yourself all time. It’s just not.
One of the things that I talk about a lot when I talk to groups about self-care is, “Look, If you are run down, beat down, tired, and sick, you are absolutely no good to the people you love.” What is the most loving thing that you can do for others? It’s loving yourself and taking care of yourself.
Put your mind, your body, and your spiritual well-being first so that you can serve others the way you want to. So that you can love them the way that feels good to you.
