Alison is a fashion-focused workhorse who believes balance comes from doing what you love while setting boundaries. She shares with us how to run a business and still stay grounded.
1. How do you stay inspired and fuel your creative vibe?
My readers are my biggest inspiration. Seeing them happy and confident and feeling stylish, some for the first time in their lives, keeps me motivated. I constantly look for inspiration in my everyday life, whether it's spotting ways to translate the latest trends into everyday life or a makeup or beauty tip I want to share with my community. They also bring me so many ideas and questions that spark inspiration
2. What does the typical day in the life look like for you?
I wake up around 6:30 and spend the first hour of my day having coffee and planning out my day. Personal e-mail comes first, followed by time spent journaling. Then I dive into my work day. Mornings are always reserved for my most creative tasks. I take a break mid-morning for a workout. Then have lunch and spend the afternoon tying up any loose ends. I'm also an avid reader and try to spend some time on my porch swing with a book for at least 30 minutes a few times a week.
3. Why is balance important in your life?
Owning a business that I love makes it especially hard to close the laptop and step away! I could work all the time if I chose to. But I know that will eventually lead to burn out, not to mention my family wouldn't be very happy with me! I've made the commitment to close my laptop and get off my phone by 5:00 every day. They hold me accountable to that. I created this business to spend more time with my family so I have to make balance a priority.
4. What is an essential practice or ritual you do weekly to help you stay balanced and grounded?
I already mentioned reading every day but I also workout, journal and get massages regularly. Oh and I get a weekly blow out which makes my life much easier!
5. What is your personal mantra?
Wake up and do the work. In every area of life, whether it's better relationships, a healthier body, more fun or a more successful business, you have to set a goal and then do the work. It doesn't matter if you take one step forward, two steps back. Just keep waking up with that resolve to do something toward your goals every single day.
6. What does happiness look like to you?
A great balance of satisfaction in my work life and personal life. Spending time with my family, doing things we love and creating an awesome experience for my customers.
7. When you look at a photograph of yourself when you were younger, if you were to write a letter to her, what advice would you give?
Oh gosh, that's a great question. I would tell her to stop being so hard on herself. Everything turns out even better than her wildest dreams. Just keep doing the work and it will all pay off.
8. What do you love the most about your life right now?
That I can be here with and for my kids every day, that I have time and financial freedom to travel and do the things we love most.
9. What current project has you fired up?
I just released a line of silk scarves made in the US. I'm so proud of this collection! The watercolor designs were created by a female artist and I'm donating a portion of profits to a women's shelter in Dallas.
10. Any final thoughts, words of advice or a favorite quote for the Happy Grace community?
Always, always trust your gut. Be true to who you are in everything you do. Your true, authentic self is what everyone wants to see and that's what they relate to.
